Ray Charles – 17 Original Albums
A film biopic in which Jamie Foxx played the musician Ray Charles was simply called "Ray". As with Elvis Presley, the first name is enough to know what it's all about: first-class songs by an excellent musician, of whom we present no fewer than 17 records from the period between 1957 and 1962 in this box set. Ray Charles Robinson was by no means born into success: his brother drowned, his mother died young and he himself went blind at a young age and later had drug problems. But piano lessons and his enormous talent helped him to a global career: in 1963 he was considered America's most popular artist.
Whether you put a label on his music and categorize it as blues, jazz or soul is irrelevant. His famous and energetic songs such as "What'd I Say" are still in our ears, and the young Elvis included "I Got A Woman" by Ray Charles on his first record.
Just how versatile Ray was as a singer and pianist is shown by his "Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music"; the record was considered a break in style when it was released: a black musician interpreted the music of whites in his own way! But the LP was a huge success and the breakthrough was achieved with both ethnic groups. Why Ray Charles was respectfully called "The Genius", is no longer a question after listening to these CDs - let the good times roll!
