The album was produced by Rick Rubin, Co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, and recorded at Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California. It features a mix of dance-punk, indie rock, and soul influences, with Beth Ditto‘s powerful vocals at the forefront. The album, including the hitsingle “Heavy Cross”, was Higly praised by critics for its production, Beth Ditto’s commanding vocals, and its blend of rock and dance elements.
