Son Volt's latest album, "Day Of The Doug", is dedicated to the music of legendary Texan troubadour Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet).
Of course, it is much more than a fond remembrance and colorful tribute. It's an evocation and celebration of a songwriter and performer whose work forged country, Tex-Mex, rock, rhythm and blues, folk and psychedelia into an utterly unique American sound. Sahm's 50-year career has been a restless and relentless search for the Holy Grail of "groove". As a kid, he played pedal steel with Hank Williams Sr. before scoring three Top 40 hits with the Sir Douglas Quintet and recording a dizzying array of solo work with a series of changing personalities on a carousel of record labels.
Son Volt's eleventh release since 1995's Trace follows confidently in Sahm's footsteps. Like any journey in search of a grail, Day of the Doug looks for all the things that make young artists fall in love with making music in the first place: Adventure, curiosity and the chance to grab a bit of immortality.
