Dave Grohl joins the ranks of filmmakers: With 'Sound City', the Grammy Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter and drummer, who has made music history several times over the past twenty years with the Foo Fighters and Nirvana, is celebrating his debut as a director. The film, which the 43-year-old presented in person at the upcoming 'Sundance Film Festival' at the beginning of 2013, is a documentary about one of the most legendary studios in the United States: Sound City in Van Nuys, a district of Los Angeles.

Grohl got the idea for the film when he purchased Sound City Studio's legendary, custom-built Neve 8028 mixing console. The console, built in 1972, is considered by many to be the crown jewel of analog studio equipment. Over the past forty years, Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot, Nine Inch Nails, Metallica and countless other music legends have recorded with it. Grohl's personal connection to the studio goes back to 1991, when he recorded the album 'Nevermind' with Nirvana in Van Nuys. The longplayer sold over thirty million copies and not only changed Grohl's life permanently and irrevocably - but also the entire rock music genre.

The impressive story of the studio is told with the help of numerous interviews that Grohl conducted with musicians and producers. The main focus was on the albums that were recorded at Sound City Studios and subsequently changed the world. In addition, the film delves into the human element of music production in the age of technology and includes several performances of new music created exclusively for the film.

The film will be distributed by Roswell Films, an offshoot of Roswell Records, the label that releases the Foo Fighters' recordings. In addition to Dave Grohl as director and producer, editor Paul Crowder ('Dogtown & Z Boys', 'Once In a Lifetime', 'Riding Giants') and writer Mark Monroe ('The Cove', 'Once In a Lifetime', 'The Tillman Story') were also involved in the making of the film.
