The most influential, most successful, but probably also the most controversial female pop artist of our time? Only aliens will not immediately shout "Madonna!" in response to this question. Before the Queen Of Pop releases her new studio album "MDNA" at the end of March, it's worth taking a compact tour of the eleven previous albums that have sold over 200 million copies worldwide - from the self-titled debut to "Hard Candy". Voilà, here is "Madonna - The Complete Studio Albums (1983 - 2008)".

The long and still ongoing reign of this Madonna Luise Veronica Ciccone from Bay City, Michigan is astonishing, especially when you realize how much malice she was met with after her first bubblegum hits ("Holiday", "Lucky Star"). She couldn't really sing, could she? And when the early nude photos in Playboy and Penthouse resurfaced... "I think," said Madonna in 1989, "when I get to the point where I no longer feel the desire to want to know something, no longer have the hunger to want to learn more and more - then I'll stop writing songs." After her big breakthrough with "Like A Virgin" and "True Blue", she had long since demonstrated her musical range - and with the autobiographical work "Like A Prayer", she had the courage to consistently focus on her own vulnerability. 
But the "Artist of the Decade" (MTV) also ruled the 90s, and not just because she won an Oscar with the song "Sooner Or Later" (from the film "Dick Tracy"). With the sex concept album "Erotica", Madonna mobilized the US youth protection authorities in 1992, who even censored the song "Did You Do It?". After these sultry hip hop beats, the "best of all possible pop madonnas" (Rolling Stone) proved her versatility two years later with "Bedtime Stories". Her sixth album also established her as a brilliant interpreter of ballads and produced one of her most successful singles to date, the US No. 1 "Take A Bow". But Madonna went one better in 1998. Not only did she virtually reinvent herself musically with producer William Orbit on songs such as "Frozen" in the direction of ambient house: "Ray Of Light" brought her four Grammies (including Best Pop Album and Best Dance Album) after she had long been ignored at the most important US music awards.

The cover version of the Don McLean classic "American Pie" - her first German No. 1 single since "La Isla Bonita" (1987) - ushered in the new millennium, followed by the electronic-oriented album "Music", on which Madonna collaborated with the French underground DJ Mirwais. In 2003, she took a stand against the then ruling US President Bush Jr. and the Iraq war with "American Life". But even radio boycotts could not stop singles like "Die Another Day" on their way to pole position in the US sales charts. Even a riding accident with broken collarbone and ribs two years later could not prevent the now 47-year-old Madonna from making a triumphant return to the clubs and discos of this world with "Confessions On A Dance Floor". The monster single "Hung Up" (with a sample of the Abba classic "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!"), which was also awarded an "Echo", reached number 1 in the charts in no fewer than 41 countries.

After being voted the third most influential person in the world by Forbes Magazine, making her debut as a film director with "Filth And Wisdom" and entering the Rock'n Roll Hall Of Fame, Madonna worked exclusively with American producers for the first time since 1994 for "Hard Candy". Timbaland and Justin Timberlake provided the R'n'B feeling and hip-hop grooves. It was the first album that didn't even need her name on the sleeve to enter the charts at number 1 in no fewer than 37 countries.

"Hard Candy" was also her tenth No. 1 album in Germany. "Madonna - The Complete Studio Albums (1983 - 2008)" brings them all together in a high-quality box set. And of course the eleventh is not missing either.
