Dream Theater – Original Album Series

Many bands find it hard to fit into any pigeonhole. But only a few prefer to make their own. Like Dream Theater. "Progressive Metal" is written on it, which only means that in their music elements of metal, prog rock and fusion flow together like nowhere else.

New Yorkers John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass) and Mike Portnoy (drums) had already found each other in the mid-1980s at Berklee College Of Music. But the breakthrough did not come until 1992, when the right singer for the band was finally found in James LaBrie from among around 200 candidates for the second Dream Theater album "Images And Words" 
The single "Pull Me Under" went into the US Top Ten. The album "Awake" made it into the German Top 20 in 1994, which is astonishing considering that this work was much more complex, harder and darker than its predecessor. But Dream Theater went one better five years later. "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory" is considered the opus magnum of the band. For the concept album about fratricide, hypnosis and rebirth, which even features a gospel choir in the song "The Spirit Carries On," Portnoy and Petrucci were inspired by the film "Shadows of the Past," among other things.

The seventh band album "Train Of Thought" was nourished by completely different sources in 2003, after Dream Theater had covered the complete albums "Master Of Puppets" (Metallica) and "The Number Of The Beast" (Iron Maiden) on the previous tour. After that they could play hard themselves - Metal in, Prog out of the drawer.
