Growing up in extremely precarious circumstances, only music and the trumpet gave Louis Daniel "Satchmo" Armstrong stability in his childhood and youth. At the age of 26, together with Kid Orys, he scored his first hit, "Muskrat Ramble", in the Billboard charts. A further 78 hits were to follow by 1966. Concert tours around the world, appearances in Hollywood films such as "The Top Ten Thousand" and "Hello Dolly" and legendary collaborations with Ella Fitzgerald, among others, made him the figurehead of contemporary American culture of his time. For this reason, the US government sent him as a musical ambassador to the African and Asian countries courted by the USA and the USSR at the height of the Cold War. He later campaigned against racial segregation in his own country and refused to cooperate with the US authorities again.

Armstrong played a significant role in the development of New Orleans jazz and established the "star soloist" in jazz. Stylistically, he influenced almost all subsequent trumpet players of traditional jazz styles. His unmistakable voice also made him one of the most successful jazz singers ever. Incidentally, Armstrong's nickname "Satchmo" is an abbreviation of "Satchel Mouth", an allusion to the size of his mouth.
