"Listen to Art Farmer and the Orchestra", recorded in 1962 and released by Mercury the following year, is considered one of Art Farmer's most ambitious works.
The trumpeter and flugelhorn player, who had already made brilliant recordings with big bands led by Quincy Jones, Benny Golson and Chico O'Farrill, presents himself here at the head of a large ensemble under the direction of Oliver Nelson. The varied standards repertoire, which includes pieces by Billy Strayhorn and John Coltrane, has been cleverly arranged by Nelson as usual and gives Art Farmer ample opportunity to shine as a soloist in front of the orchestra.
