For "Undercover", the Stones recorded ten fresh songs and reacted to the course of the world in the MTV age in 1983. After ten years of Jagger and Richards, alias The Glitter Twins, going it alone, they even brought in an outside producer: Chris Kimsey, the sound engineer of their last three or four albums. Kimsey has also worked with Killing Joke, New Model Army, The Chieftains, The Psychedelic Furs, INXS and Duran Duran. The recordings took almost a year. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards clashed time and again. Jagger wanted to continue exploring new musical territory with the Stones. Richards, now "clean", wanted to return to the Stones' rock and blues roots. The result was a wild mix of hard rock, reggae, pop, soul and new wave, under Jagger's thorny, sometimes crass lyrics. With "Undercover", the band expanded their stylistic palette for the last time, and their 23rd studio LP became the most controversial Stones album of all time. Rolling Stone praised "Undercover" as a masterpiece: "This record explains why the Stones have stayed at the top for so long. 'Undercover' is rock'n'roll without apology."
