The Beatles – Yellow Submarine

"Yellow Submarine", the classic animated Beatles movie from 1968, has been digitally restored and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. The soundtrack created for the film will be released on CD on the same day.

The film, which is currently out of print, has been restored for the first time in 4K digital resolution by Paul Rutan Jr. and his team of specialists at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. Because the original artwork is hand-drawn, it required special care; automated software could not be used to digitally clean the restored photochemical elements of the film. Each individual image had to be processed by hand.

"Yellow Submarine", written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich Segal, was directed by George Dunning and began its development into a feature film when Brodax, who had previously produced almost 40 episodes of the animated Beatles TV series for ABC, presented his extraordinary vision of a feature-length animated film to the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein.

Based on a song by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the film spins an imaginative story full of peace, love and hope - moods that were expressed in the Beatles' songs, such as "Eleanor Rigby", "When I'm Sixty-Four", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "All You Need Is Love" and "It's All Too Much". When the film was first released in 1968, it was immediately celebrated as a groundbreaking artistic achievement, having revolutionized the genre by combining the informal approaches of the time with innovative animation techniques.

The film is steeped in the latest art trends of the younger generation at the time, such as the gaudy pop art images of Andy Warhol, Martin Sharp, Alan Aldridge and Peter Blake. Heinz Edelmann, responsible for art direction and production design, created a classic of animated cinema with "Yellow Submarine" - supported by the creative minds Robert Balser and Jack Stokes (animation directors) and their team of illustrators and technical artists.

"Right from the start, I thought the movie should consist of a series of short, connected episodes," recalls Edelmann. "There should be a new style every five minutes or so to keep the interest going until the end of the movie." These styles included mixing live-action photography with drawings, 3-dimensional sequences and so-called kaleidoscopic "rotoscoping", where filmed material was transferred frame by frame into drawings. The entire production took almost two years and involved 14 different scripts, 40 illustrators and 140 technical artists. The result was a triumph and marked a milestone in the history of animated film.
