Five long, meditative tracks between jazz, ambient and world music are presented by "Openness Trio", the Blue Note debut of a unique musical collective consisting of guitarist and producer Nate Mercereau, saxophonist Josh Johnson and drummer Carlos Niño. The three artists bring extensive experience from collaborations with artists such as André 3000, Meshell Ndegeocello, Kamasi Washington, Shabaka, Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven and many others to the joint project.
The music of Nate Mercereau, Josh Johnson and Carlos Niño is sometimes overwhelming and pictorial ("Hawk Dreams"), sometimes abstract and full of subtle moods ("Elsewhere"). All the tracks are united by the intense communication between the three artists, the haunting emotionality and the fascination of joint explorations and discoveries. The recordings were made in five different sessions in Los Angeles and Ventura County - outdoors in the hills of Ojai with a view of the Topatopa Mountains, in an atmospheric living room in Elysian Park, in an "Oak Tree Cathedral" in Churchill Orchard in Ojai, amidst a collection of electronic instruments in the courtyard of a house in Echo Park and under a pepper tree in Elsewhere / Topanga Canyon.
