In the legendary catalog of the incredible Captain Beefheart, the perfectly sophisticated and experimentally approached album Trout Mask Replica (1969) overshadows everything else Don Van Vliet accomplished in terms of further brilliant achievements. This also applies to the three outstanding follow-up albums Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970), The Spotlight Kid (1972) and Clear Spot (1972), which are nevertheless certainly in no way inferior musically and creatively to their monumental predecessor. 

Lick My Decals Off, Baby was recorded within a few weeks in the summer of 1970 at the United Recording Group and was released in October of that year. Always one of Van Vliet's personal favorites, it marks the culmination of his experiments with dissonance and contains such exceptional tracks as the quirky, humorous "I Love You, You Big Dummy" and the exquisite guitar solo in "One Red Nose That I Mean." 

The following summer in 1971, the album The Spotlight Kid was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and released in early 1972. The album features more down-to-earth blues-rock sounds, such as on "Click Clack," "I'm Gonna Boogalorize You Baby" and "Alice In Blunderland." Renowned critic Lester Bangs wrote in the March 1972 U.S. Rolling Stone that Beefheart had struck the perfect balance on the album between an "intensely personal style of statement" and "mass appeal." Bangs praised the album for "cleverness and genius." 

A short time later, Clear Spot was released. Recorded in the summer of 1972, the album included some exceptional songs such as the vulnerable love song "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains," the soul ballad "Too Much Time," and the pulsating "Big Eyed Beans From Venus."
