Miles Davis – Round About Midnight

Miles Davis' quintet was founded in 1955 and is widely regarded as one of the greatest formations in jazz history. Each of its members was an individual creative force that could easily have taken on a leadership role. "Philly Joe and Red Garland were the same age," Miles explained in his autobiography, "about three years older than me. Coltrane and I were born the same year, though I was a little older. Paul Chambers was the baby in the group, he was only twenty, but he played as if he'd always been there. And Red too; he gave me the light touch of Ahmad Jamal and a bit of Erroll Garner, along with his own crap in all that. So it all happened." This quintet - like many other great bands made up of important figures - didn't last long, despite Miles' best attempts to keep it together. Round About Midnight" was Miles' first album for this company, and he titled it after the tune by Thelonious Monk that had brought him such success in Newport in 1955.
