"Getz/Gilberto", the bossa nova classic by Stan Getz, João and Astrud Gilberto, is one of the most famous Verve albums and one of the best-selling jazz LPs of all time.
Chance sometimes writes the best stories. As in the case of "Getz/Gilberto". Astrud Gilberto had actually only accompanied her husband João Gilberto to the recording sessions as an interpreter.
But then Stan Getz let Astrud sing the tracks "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Corcovado", even though she was not a professional singer. The album, which was also recorded with Jobim and drumming legend Milton Banana, became a worldwide hit and was the first jazz production ever to win the Grammy for Best Album of the Year.
