John Coltrane – Giant Steps: The Best Of The Early Years 1956-1960
Coltrane, who died of liver failure at 40, was arguably the most influential saxophonist in any musical genre, including Lester Young, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins and even Charlie Parker. His dazzling solos are still being transcribed as exercises for students today, while players around the world are still trying to imitate his characteristically intense and soulful sound - more than forty years after his death.
"Giant Steps", the astonishing improvisation Coltrane recorded in 1959, has been a model for aspiring saxophonists ever since. It's a fitting title for this CD 10 Original Album Collection, which brings together for the first time not only Coltrane's first recordings as a leader, but also many rare and out-of-print recordings he made between 1956 and 1960 for labels such as Prestige, Blue Note and Atlantic.
