"Smackwater Jack", originally released on A&M Records in 1971, is a fascinating snapshot of Quincy Jones' musical journey from big band jazz to R&B, soul funk and groovy TV and movie themes. The funky title track kicks off an energetic album with standout tracks including Quincy's iconic theme from the TV series "Ironside" and versions of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Vince Guaraldi's hit "Cast Your Fate To The Wind". The final track on the album, "Guitar Blues Odyssey", is an epic journey through the history of the guitar in black music. The incredible line-up of musicians includes Freddie Hubbard, Jimmy Smith, Milt Jackson, Ray Brown and Grady Tate as well as vocals from Valerie Simpson and harmonica solos from Toots Thielemans.
