"O.C., California", "How I Met Your Mother", "Twilight", "Californication", "Six Feet Under" - especially in Europe, the numerous uses of their songs in popular films and series were probably the first contact with Death Cab For Cutie for many fans. And once you've heard the emotional alternative rock of singer Ben Gibbard and co, you'll always want more.

This has enabled the quintet from the USA to release their tenth studio album, "Asphalt Meadows". On the follow-up to 2018's "Thank You For Today", Death Cab For Cutie sound more mature and nuanced than ever before. No wonder, after all, the band has been active for 25 years now and the gentlemen are of a correspondingly advanced age.

Nevertheless, "Asphalt Meadows" remains a classic Death Cab For Cutie album at its core with a few experiments within the established sound. For example, the lyrical spoken word passages in the song "Foxglove Through The Clearcut". Other songs such as "Here To Forever" or "Roman Candles" are small, emotional anthems and represent the classic Death Cab sound at its best.

As always, there is also a lot to discover lyrically from the eight-time Grammy-nominated band from Bellingham. "Asphalt Meadows" deals with the big issues of our time, such as climate change and the division of society. And of course, the pandemic has also left its mark on the songwriting. "Roman Candles', for example, is about the paralyzing, existential fear that comes with living in a nervous city on a dying planet," says the band. Singer Ben Gibbard adds: "The lyrics were put together from various songs that all revolve around my anxiety. The feeling that the glue that holds us together as a functioning society has cracked massively during the pandemic."

"Asphalt Meadows" was produced by Grammy award-winner John Congleton, who has also worked with acts such as St. Vincent and Sharon Van Etten.

"We recorded "Asphalt Meadows (acoustic)" over four days in December 2022 with our friend Andy Park. Our goal was to reinterpret our last album with as minimal arrangements as possible and present the songs in their rawest, most intimate form. Some songs were able to take similar forms to the actual album. others had to be completely reworked to come into focus."
