Impressions presents four memorable performances by John Coltrane from the period 1961-1963. The recordings of India and Impressions were made during his engagement at the Village Vanguard. The recording of Up 'Gainst the Wall dates from 1962, and that of After the Rain from 1963.

The recordings for the 1963 Impulse! Records album "Impressions" were recorded between 1961 and 1963 during a performance at the Village Vanguard and during two different sessions in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. They show the classic John Coltrane Quartet, sometimes augmented by guests, at the height of its creative powers and document the ensemble's rapidly evolving modal language. The album is a concise yet essential portrait of John Coltrane, and the extended live recordings "India" and the 15-minute title track in particular illustrate the quartet's growing turn towards sustained improvisation with extended harmony, rhythmic interplay and experimental balance.
