Cuddly Toys – Guillotine Theatre

‘Guillotine Theatre’ was the debut album from Cuddly Toys, first released only in Japan in 1979, and then a revamped version in the UK in 1980. Cuddly Toys are the glam-punk band who evolved from the London glam-shock punk band Raped, and often noted for their version of a David Bowie/Marc Bolan unreleased co-write, Madman. Cross-dressing in an era when it was outrageous, their hot-panted Japanese drummer ‘Paddy Phield’ helped them gain fans in his home country. Not on vinyl since the original releases, this double-album version is extended with a whole side of the different Japanese album mixes, two tracks omitted from the UK version, and three 1980 demos from the same line-up. A limited edition in red vinyl, with an obi-strip like the import copies of the Japanese album. An album of Raped recordings was released by US label Puke N Vomit Records in 2024. Singer Sean Purcell died in 1996. A Japanese version of the band, as Cuddly ToyZ led by Paddy, has released an album and regularly gig around Japan.
