Asinhell – Impii Hora

"Impii Hora" is the debut album by Danish musician Michael Schøn Poulsen (born April 1, 1975). He is the lead singer, rhythm guitarist and main songwriter of the rock band Volbeat.

Asinhell is a band, not a side project. Before Volbeat, Michael's metal band was called Dominus, with Morten Toft Hansen, also from Ringsted, on drums. Michael was Dominus' lead singer, booker, manager and accountant. When Poulsen was putting together songs for Volbeat's 2021 album, Servant Of The Mind, he wrote a number of death metal riffs. When he was done with the Volbeat album, he started writing songs for his new death metal band Asinhell, whose debut album Impii Hora (Latin for Ungodly Hour) is a tribute to Poulsen's favorite old-school bands. The songs are based on crunching riffs, but with strong guitar hooks and shout-along choruses.

"Bands like Death, Entombed, Bolt Thrower, Autopsy, Dismember, Grave, Mercyful Fate, Possessed and other old school bands are the reason why we can do this at all," says Poulsen. Although he is proud to wear his influences on his sleeves, Asinhell has developed its own identity. "With Asinhell, I tried to write songs without rules, but because I was so used to writing with Volbeat, I couldn't really avoid writing bridges, hooks or a certain kind of chorus," he says. "I think the combination of old-school death metal riffs with a bit of structure makes the songs really strong."
