Ilta – Hyvää Joulua CD

Ilta – Hyvää Joulua

Ilta, one of Finland’s most beloved artists, will release a Christmas album titled *Hyvää joulua* (“Merry Christmas”) on November 20th. The album was born from a desire to capture the unique atmosphere of Ilta’s cherished Christmas concerts—events that sell out year after year—in a recorded format. The album was recorded live in an unconventional way inside the atmospheric wooden church in Oulunkylä, utilizing an immersive recording technique: all the singers and musicians performed together in the same space, just as they do during her concerts. “We live in an advanced era where music, among other things, can be polished to perfection in the studio—out-of-tune notes can be corrected, vocal and instrumental takes can be repeated until everyone is satisfied, the tempo remains absolute and steady, and the sound is crisp and consistent. However, for Christmas, creating a ‘perfect’ recording didn’t feel right to me. Instead, drawing inspiration from the message of Christmas, it felt meaningful for the music to primarily convey emotion, life, and humanity,” Ilta explains. For Ilta, Christmas songs have been a part of her life since childhood. The album features a collection of beloved Christmas carols, some of which have been in her repertoire since she was under ten years old. The tracklist also includes Ilta’s own original Christmas songs—*Kuka hän on* and *Tää aika vuodesta taas*—as well as the title track, *Hyvää joulua*, which came into being spontaneously on the final day of the recording sessions. The album is a tribute to the message of Christmas, the joy of making music together, and the people with whom Ilta’s songs have come to life over the years in concert halls and churches across Finland. Captured on the record are those very magical moments that emerge when a group of people gathers to create and experience music.
