The legendary leader of the Sun Ra Arkestra finally makes his solo debut at the age of 100. And Neneh Cherry joins the band as a guest.

The legendary saxophonist Marshall Allen, a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra since 1958 and its leader since 1995, has never released a solo album under his own name in his almost 70-year career, and this solo debut marks a new beginning for Allen. His first solo album, recorded two days after his 100th birthday on May 25, 2024, marks a new beginning for Allen, who has never released a solo album under his own name in his nearly 70-year career. The title track, "New Dawn," was written by Arkestra saxophonist Noel Scott, who also shared Allen's lab with Sun Ra since the 1980s, and features a guest appearance by Nena Cherry, stepdaughter of legendary trumpeter Don Cherry and a singer in her own right. Philadelphia's proud jazz musicians and Arkestra veterans, including Scott, have come together for Allen on this album of his best work.
