On "Bashin' - The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith", his first album for Verve Records, Hammond organist Jimmy Smith presented himself with two very different line-ups in 1962: While he recorded the first four tracks of the album with a big band led and arranged by Oliver Nelson, he recorded the remaining tracks with his regular trio, with whom he had previously made several albums for Blue Note. These historic recording sessions, produced by Creed Taylor, were a turning point in Smith's career. With the title "Walk on the Wild Side", which reached number 21 in the Billboard Hot 100 charts, he also landed his biggest hit to date.
