Lou Reed – Original Album Series
The man from Brooklyn had long since decisively expanded the vocabulary of rock'n roll - both as a member of The Velvet Underground and with early solo albums like the '72 classic "Transformer." But in the late '80s, his "Walk On The Wild Side" (the single hit) took a few surprising turns once again. And be it only that Lou Reed finally titled an album simply "New York", after his hometown had served him as a creative playground for so long. The nearly 1-hour song cycle has remained his best, most coherent solo work to this day - as personal as it is profound, as biting as it is humorous, and with new comrades-in-arms such as guitarist Mike Rathke and bassist Rob Wassermann, it has been implemented in an unpretentiously energetic manner. With "Dime Store Mystery" Reed also succeeded in a beautiful homage to his mentor Andy Warhol, who died in 1987. Songs For Drella" continues this thread. The album reunited Reed with John Cale in a spectacular collaboration, a good 20 years after the latter had left the Velvet Underground. Musically restrained and thus entirely focused on the story(s), the duo succeeded in creating a richly detailed, moving portrait that looked far beyond the public Warhol image. Surprisingly little morbid came across then 1992 "Magic And Loss", considering that Lou Reed dealt on this album exclusively with illness and death, after he had lost two friends within a year to cancer. With "Set The Twilight Reeling" and songs like "Egg Cream" Reed then returned to the fun of life and loud guitars, before "Ecstasy" explored the dark side of lust and love at the turn of the millennium in tracks like "Paronoia Key Of E", "Mad" or "White Prism". He also came up with the 18-minute feedback orgy "Like A Possum" - don't say Lou Reed has already run out of surprises...
