Tony Scott & The Indonesian All Stars – Djanger Bali
Indonesia and jazz? Not so far-fetched! Improvisation is a part of traditional gamelan, and modal playing goes back 1000 years; jazz began seriously delving into modes with Miles Davis in the 1950’s. US clarinet icon Tony Scott proselytized jazz during his six-year sojourn in Asia, and in so doing brought Asian music masters, including players on this album, into the jazz world. Down Beat called pianist Bubi Chen “The Art Tatum of Asia”, and saxophonist Marjono, whose influences include John Coltrane, is an authority on traditional Balinese and Javanese music. Performing their never before heard ethno-jazz arrangements this inimitable formation even toured through Europe and opened the Berlin Jazz Days in 1967. The album was remastered from the original analogue master tapes by Christoph Stickel (cs mastering) with the vinyl getting an AAA treatment. The original artwork is complimented by a supplement with additional liner notes, pictures, and a scan of the original master tape box. Until now, to get your hands on this rarity LP you had to be lucky to purchase an expensive original pressing. Finally, it’s available again for everyone to enjoy!
