The third of the remastered Echo & The Bunnymen albums, is a Reissue of Porcupine, the band's third and most successful album - it charted at it charted at number 2 in the UK. The album was recorded at Trident London, Rockfield in South Wales and Amazon Studios in Liverpool Liverpool. The producer was Ian Broudie, who is named in the credits as "Kingbird" in the credits.
Due to tensions within the band during the recording process the album was rejected by Warner as "too dark and uncommercial" rejected. The band then decided to re-record the album and take the previous version as a draft. Shankar, who played the String instruments for the successful single "The Back Of Love", was brought back into the studio to lend the rest of the album his bright, radiant note to the rest of the album. During these days, the single "The Cutter", which eventually became the band's first Top 10 hit.
The result of these re-recordings is a much finer, more detailed sound, that builds the bridge between "Heaven Up Here" and the next album "Ocean Rain". The fundamental difference is that the early roughness has now been replaced by a more elaborate, fuller sound that is enhanced by the Addition of strings and percussion. The band not only found itself not only found itself musically, but also a new structure and sophistication Sophistication without losing its mysterious aura.
