As a reaction to the prog and glam of the early 1970s, the “back-to-basics” sound of British pub rock was rooted in the rock ’n’ roll and R&B of earlier decades, and few bands embodied it as powerfully as Dr. Feelgood.

The quartet from Essex already had years of live experience under their belt when they went into the studio with producer Vic Maile to record “Down By The Jetty,” and that shows in the twelve tracks that precede the live recording “Bony Moronie”/“Tequila” at the end of this debut. Guitarist Wilko Johnson wrote several great original songs for this album, including “She Does It Right” and “Roxette,” and frontman Lee Brilleaux’s bluesy vocals round out the whole thing.
