Released on Verve in 1958, "Give Him The Ooh-La La" clearly captures pianist and singer Blossom Dearie's characteristic blend of cool understatement and harmonic finesse. Produced by Norman Granz, Dearie leads a quartet consisting of guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jo Jones with her vocals and piano. The program includes songs by Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart and Noël Coward as well as two tracks co-composed by Dearie - "Try Your Wings" and "Bang Goes the Drum (And You're in Love)" - that showcase her wit and compositional talent. From the mischievous charm of the title track to the graceful melancholy of "Plus je t'embrasse", Dearie's performances combine elegance with rhythmic ease. The intimate arrangements leave room for a subtle interplay between her voice and the piano, supported by a rhythm section steeped in the language of swing and bop.
