The 67-year-old internist's son from Los Angeles recently released the second installment of his "Songbook" retrospective, which revisited old material. But if you want to understand why and how Randy Newman became the most fearless and mercilessly amusing songwriter not only of his generation, the "Mark Twain of popular song" (as Cream magazine wrote), there is of course no getting around the originals. Voilà, here they are collected, from the self-titled debut, whose orchestral arrangements in 1968 only made a few critics prick up their ears, to "Little Criminals", which brought him gold nine years later and a completely unexpected Top 10 hit with the sarcastic hymn to the "Short People". "Shockingly amoral songs" (Rolling Stone) like this one were already plentiful in Mr. Newman's repertoire. In the title track of "Sail Away", for example, he took a sunny look at slavery and anticipated the "old Europe" bon mot of Donald Rumsfeld in "Political Science". "Good Old Boys" is still unrivaled today as a concept album about the US South. And with "You Can Leave Your Hat On" and "Mama Told Me Not To Come", there is also a revisiting of hits that others such as Joe Cocker and "Three Dog Night" sang into the charts for Randy Newman, who was always "serious about comedy".
