Elvis – G. I. Blues
G.I. Blues is the first film Elvis Presley made after his stint in the U.S. Army. It tells the musical tale of “Tulsa” (Presley), a singing G.I. stationed in West Germany, who dreams of opening his own club when he gets out of the service. The LP soundtrack, originally released by RCA Victor in October 1960, was one of Elvis’ biggest hit albums, staying at number 1 on the US album chart for 8 weeks. It did this despite not producing a big hit single in the US (although “Wooden Heart” was a huge hit abroad, it never charted nationally). Without a doubt it’s one of Elvis’ best soundtracks. And it is no wonder that it spent over two years on the Billboard charts, with such great songs as “Tonight Is So Right for Love”, the delightful “Wooden Heart”, the bluesy “Tonight’s All Right for Love” and the lovely, lyrical “Pocketful of Rainbows”. Even the somewhat sappy, but sweet lullaby “Big Boots” is welcome here. “Shopping Around” is an underappreciated rocker with its upbeat lighthearted rock & roll sound, amidst such magnificent up-tempo numbers as “Didja Ever” and the title track, “G.I. Blues”. And, of course, there’s a version of Elvis’ classic “Blue Suede Shoes”, a new recording of the song Presley first recorded in 1956.
This quintessential collector’s edition includes 4 bonus tracks from the same period. All of these original gems are simple two-and-a-half-minute songs that convey all the sheer power and emotion of rock & roll. Solid Blue Vinyl.
