The only recording by Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers for the Impulse! Records label was made in the summer of 1961 and marked a turning point for the popular hard bop formation. On the one hand, this was their first appearance as a sextet with trombonist Curtis Fuller, and on the other, it was their last recording with pianist Bobby Timmons. It was also unusual that only one piece by one band member was on the program and otherwise only standards were played.
