Together with "The Cat", this was one of the biggest hit albums of the Verve era. Recorded in New Jersey on June 14 and 15, 1965.

On his first seven studio albums for Verve, Hammond organist Jimmy Smith had always worked with top arrangers such as Oliver Nelson, Claus Ogerman and Lalo Schifrin. It was only on the 1965 album "Organ Grinder Swing" that he returned to the trio line-up with guitar and drums with which he had recorded for Blue Note at the beginning of his career. The album, which stayed in the US Billboard 200 charts for 31 weeks and reached number 15, was Smith's second highest chart placing.
