Quincy Jones: Big Band Bossa Nova

With this successful album in 1962, Quincy Jones proved that light and airy bossa novas can also be played with a big band if the arrangements are made by a maestro like himself. Solo highlights were provided by flugelhorn player Clark Terry, alto saxophonist Phil Woods, pianist Lalo Schifrin, guitarist Jim Hall and flautist Rahsaan Roland Kirk. The title "Soul Bossa Nova" was sampled by the Dream Warriors for their 1991 hit "My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style".

Orchestra conducted by Quincy Jones / Bass - Chris White / Drums - Rudy Collins / Guitar - Jim Hall / Piano - Lalo Schifrin / Percussion - Cancho Gomez, Jack Del Rio, José Paula / Alto saxophone - Phil Woods / Flugelhorn - Clark Terry / Flute - Jerome Richardson, Rahsaan Roland Kirk / Alto flute - Jerome Richardson / Tenor saxophone - Paul Gonsalves / Woodwind - Jerome Richardson

"Big Band Bossa Nova" is the unique mix of jazz and bossa nova music by jazz trumpeter, bandleader and genius Quincy Jones. It is the perfect combination of Brazilian rhythms and American big band sound and revolutionized jazz in the 1960s. The album was recorded on September 7, 1962 at A & R Studios in New York City and is a tribute to Brazilian culture and music.

Jones, who acted as both producer and arranger on the record, created a sound that remains influential to this day. The opener "Soul Bossa Nova", which was also composed by Quincy Jones, is still a classic today and is frequently used in films and commercials. The album is a milestone in jazz and bossa nova history and brought Quincy Jones his first Grammy Award. It was not to be the last. Jones expanded his repertoire and produced albums for artists such as Herbie Mann, Donna Summer and Aretha Franklin. He produced "Off the Wall", "Thriller" and "Bad" for Michael Jackson. These albums helped to make Jackson a superstar and Jones one of the most successful music producers of all time. Quincy Jones has won a total of 28 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Legend Award and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
