Featuring the singles ‘Colour My Life’, ‘How Can I Love You More’ (the band’s first top ten hit), ‘Excited’ and ‘Someday’, M People’s debut album was issued in 1992 on Deconstruction Records.
It was the early days of a remarkably creative period for electronic and dance music in the UK, during which DJ-led acts began to make an indelible mark, and the songs and production of Mike Pickering (one of the original DJs at Manchester’s The Haçienda) and Paul Heard, coupled with the highly distinctive vocals of Heather Small, were in the vanguard of this success.
By mid-decade, the group were really cooking - with hits across the Atlantic and a Mercury Music Prize in the bag for their second album Elegant Slumming - and Northern Soul was reissued with an adjusted tracklisting, before being remastered and expanded ten years later. It is this 2005, 15-track remaster, spread over two discs, that is being made available on vinyl for the first time.
