The Doobie Brothers ‎– Original Album Series

No, they were not brothers, nor was even one of them named Doobie. The Californian band around singers and songwriters Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons rather owes its name to the West Coast slang for a joint.

In their early days, the group succeeded with laid-back country boogie, especially in the biker community, before producer Ted Templeman put them on the road to success in 1972 with their second album, "Toulouse Street." "Listen To The Music" was the name of the big hit that is still associated with the Doobies today and established their musical trademarks: catchy rhythm, striking chorus and crystal-clear (harmony) vocals that even had to fear comparisons with the Eagles. The follow-up albums "The Captain And Me" and "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" were now sure U.S. Top 10 candidates, and "Black Water" was the Doobie Brothers' first No. 1. For "Stampede" the exceptional guitarist Jeff 'Skunk'Baxter joined the band from Steely Dan in 1975, but more decisive for the musical profile was the following expansion of the vocal department: Michael McDonald introduced himself excellently on "Takin' It To The Streets" with the title track or "It Keeps You Runnin'" and also landed solo successes like "Ya Mo Be There" after the end of the Doobies in 1982.
