Wet Leg – Moisturiser

White Cassette

After the surprise success of their debut, Wet Leg are following up. "moisturizer" is the name of the new record, produced by Dan Carey and mixed by Alan Moulder, written in a house on the English east coast, thematically located somewhere between horror films, tour flashbacks and cabin fever. Sounds like chaos? It is - but with a plan.

The list of ingredients: Friendship, madness, alien movies, lesbian sex, guitars, quick successes, even quicker crashes. Where the debut still balanced between indie pop and sarcasm, moisturizer turns up the volume. More force, more madness, more melodies. "We asked ourselves: Is this fun live?" says Hester Chambers. The answer? Oh yes.

They have worked hard to find out exactly what works live. With Ellis Durand (bass), Henry Holmes (drums) and Joshua Mobaraki (guitar, synth), Wet Leg became a razor-sharp live band on tour. The result: number one in the charts, three Grammys, two BRIT Awards and over half a billion streams. A classic moment of decision: "Do we go pop now - or keep doing our own thing?" The answer was clear. So back into the studio with Carey, this time in the south of England. Writing by day, horror films by night. The result is a new creative symbiosis - and all five band members have songwriting credits.

The first foretaste comes with "catch these fists" - an electrifying dance-punk hit with burning bass, screeching synths and Teasdale's ice-cold vocals. The video, shot on the Isle of Wight, is a tribute to Ti West, Cameron Crowe and her own past. The themes? Love, above all. In all its facets. Obsessive, desperate, exultant. Teasdale has fallen in love - and the whole album sounds like it. "I thought I was straight until I met my partner. Now I write love songs where I'm not pining after a man - it feels better."

Wet Leg also turn things up visually: The cover shows Chambers and Teasdale with grotesque claws, diabolical grins and absolutely no desire to explain themselves. They just do it. And that sounds damn good.
